Surface roughness is a way to quantify the number of surface irregularities. The Ra parameter represents the arithmetic mean of all surface heights measured over a given area. As mentioned above, they are divided into three characteristics: roughness, corrugation, and flatness. These factors affect surface characteristics.
Therefore, there are several methods of measuring surface roughness. The main types of measurement techniques are direct measurement, comparative measurement, non-contact measurement, and process measurement.
1. Direct measurement method
This process assesses the surface finish by drawing the tip of a pencil perpendicular to the surface and along the surface. Another method to assess the surface roughness of magnetic materials is inductive. In this method, an inductive pickup uses electromagnetic radiation to measure the distance to the test surface. The direct measurement method can be used to compare parameter values for roughness levels.
2. Comparative measurement method
The comparison technique employs surface roughness samples made using the same equipment, procedures, and materials as the surface to be analyzed. The sample is compared to known surface roughness using the optical and tactile senses. Because the procedure is subjective, this technique is best suited for non-critical applications.

3. Method of non-contact measurement
In a contact approach, sound or light is used instead of a stylus. Optical instruments are classified into several types, including confocal and white-light interference. Electron microscopy techniques are also employed, although the equipment used has a narrow field of view.
4. Process measurement techniques
This approach enables continuous surface monitoring during machining or other processes, which can provide useful feedback to the operator. Furthermore, because they measure the surface under conditions closer to the actual application, process measuring methods may yield more accurate results than other approaches.
Second, acoustic waves can be utilized to assess surface finish. An ultrasonic pulse is sent to the surface via ultrasonic scattering. In the test equipment, ultrasonic waves are transformed and reflected. As a result, the surface roughness is calculated using the reflected waves.
Furthermore, by beaming a laser beam onto the surface and measuring the intensity of the reflected light, light can be used to evaluate surface roughness. The rougher the surface, the more light is distributed, and the intensity of reflected light decreases.
